How to strengthen your child’s immune system
With seasons changing all-round the year health authorities are already sounding alarms about how the flu season can affect ones health especially in children’s. Health statistics show that influenza cases have more than doubled in recent weeks.
With school back too, it’s a good idea to start boosting your child’s immune system so they (and you) are able to fight or prevent any common colds and flus that sneak in! A sick child in the house means everyone is at risk, especially those with existing health conditions.
Does your child have a weak immune system?
Many children often succumb to various infections, common colds and flus while they are growing up. While some infections are unavoidable or common, if your child is constantly sick, it might mean their immune system is weak.
A weak immune system is caused by nutritional deficiencies. For example, your child’s body might be low in vitamin C, an essential antioxidant to help combat common colds and flus, making him or her more prone to these infections.
So what are some of the signs of a weak immune system
- Always have a cold
- Tummy troubles- nearly 70 percent of immune system is in your digestive system
- Feel tired all time.
- frequent infections like pneumonia, bronchitis, ear infections, anemia
To avoid your child falling sick all the time, you have to strengthen their immune system so he or she can fight infections better, and recover quickly.
How do you boost your child’s immune system, not just in the colder months but all year round?
A nutritionally balanced diet with zinc
It’s a battle to get kids to eat enough fruit, vegetables and wholegrains (if you don’t eat your broccoli, you won’t get dessert!). However, they do need a wide range of nutrients for their developing bodies and immune system including trace minerals like zinc. The best way for them to access these nutrients and trace minerals like zinc is through their diet.
Zinc is essential to support a strong immune system and for vital chemical reactions in the body. NUTRIWAY™ Kids 4-in-1 Plus contains Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Zinc and Bifidobacterium lactis 1 billion CFU per serve to support kids’ immune health.
Some common sources of zinc are:
- wholegrains - some breakfast cereals are fortified with zinc
- milk products
- red meat and poultry
- baked beans
- nuts like cashews and almonds
Tip: Offer nuts for snacks and add chickpeas to salads and soups. Baked beans on toast is always a winner! (Check the amount of sodium in the baked beans and opt for a low-sodium brand).
If you feel that your child is still lacking nutritional support, a supplement can help fill in those nutritional gaps and provide immune support.
Focus on zzzz’s
Children need the right amount of sleep to rest, process and rejuvenate from the day’s activities. Research has shown that sleep enhances their immune system allowing it to function at optimum levels and helping to fight any infections.
According to The Sleep Foundation, sleep deprivation can affect the immune system and cause sicknesses. A 2019 report titled Growing Up In Australia found that a large number of Australian adolescents are not getting enough sleep at night which can affect their moods, physical and mental health and therefore their immunity.
Recommended sleep guidelines are:
- 9-11 hours of sleep for children aged 5-13 years
- 8-10 hours of sleep for adolescents aged 14-17 years
Probiotics and prebiotics
Many diseases originate due to poor gut health, and it’s as important for children to have good gut health as it is for adults.
Make sure to include plenty of foods like tofu in stir fries, fermented foods like sauerkraut in your child’s diet to increase the number of good bacteria in their tummies.
If they like yoghurt, make it a daily addition at mealtimes or as an after-school snack. Plain yoghurt with fresh fruit and a drizzle of honey is generally best as most commercial yoghurts have high amounts of sugars and additives. NUTRIWAY™ Kids 4-in-1 Plus has probiotic that helps maintain a balance of good bacteria in the gut with continued use.
We tend to stay indoors more during the cooler months which can affect our vitamin D levels, another important vitamin for a healthy immune system.
Try and get outdoors for a walk with the kids. Let them ride bicycles, walk the dog or roller-skate especially when the sun is out. Walking near the beach is also great for health. For younger children, a visit to playgrounds can be a welcome break from being kept indoors all the time.
Exercise has so many benefits for the immune system- it helps increase blood flow and oxygen to various organs, strengthens the immune system to help fight infections and reduces stress.
